The methodology Pachamama Raymi

In rural areas of the Peruvian Andes tens of
thousands of farmer families live in miserable
conditions. They can hardly produce enough
food, despite the vastness of their territory.
40 to 60% of their children suffer from chronic malnutrition.

Child labor, alcoholism of both parents, domestic violence, and chronic disease are closely linked to their inability to manage their land more effectively.

But there is a way out: these forgotten people can be helped.

Intercambio campesino

The methodology Pachamama Raymi encourages farmer families to improve their quality of life, ie to motivate them to overcome their problems. This is achieved through a combination of peer learning and very motivating contests between families and between their communities.

Contestants visit other communities which have different management techniques, practicing a number of innovations. During these visits people learn how to improve their production and variety of food crops, through which malnutrition of their children can be reduced. Besides people learn how to improve their houses and personal hygiene, reducing the number of infectious diseases affecting so many.

After returning to their villages, participants implement their new knowledge and sharing it with other families in their community. Each competition lasts about six months. At the end of each competition families and communities that improved more than others, will recieve attractive cash prizes.

The Pachamama Raymi methodology is a success. Experience has shown that in four years, or less, people are able to generate self-confidence, determination and results required to continue growing. Pachamama Raymi makes it possible to dramatically improve quality of life of the participants through their own merits and means, with little outside, other than generate motivation and peer learning.

How much does it cost? Less than 15 Euros per person per year.
